As we discussed in our previous blog, working in collaboration with clients is most important. It is a requirement for a successful relationship and client satisfaction. Being collaborative avoids misunderstandings and surprises are eliminated. So, we know collaboration and teamwork is imperative, but what if you have a prospect or client who is not willing to collaborate?
What does a non-collaborative client say?
- "I don't don't care how you do it - you're the expert."
- "I don't have any ideas, just come up with a couple recommendations."
What problems could develop from a non-collaborative client?
- Extra work may be needed to come up with additional ideas
- A possible re-do of work already done
- Misunderstandings and errors
So, how can you ensure a collaborative relationship with clients?
- Tell your clients upfront that you require collaboration and teamwork.
- Outline the steps in which the client will collaborate with you.
- When a client says something that would indicate they are not collaborative, ask follow up questions to draw out needed information.
- Review processes with clients, check for understanding and get their approval.
If you have other suggestions - we'd enjoy hearing from you.
