Permission Based Email

I recently heard a couple of people talking about what permission based email is.  I wanted to step into the conversation, but the one person was handling it quite well.  The quandary was, can you add someone to your email newsletter database if you simply meet them at a networking event and exchange cards?

In my opinion, just meeting someone at a networking event does not give you permission to start sending them your email newsletter.  Yet, I get these types of email newsletters all the time after meeting someone at a networking event.  So is it OK or isn't it?

I found this article. http://www.lyrishq.com/index.php/Email-Marketing/Permission-Email-Marketing-Permission-is-Not-Optional.html

My opinion stands, you should not add people to your email newsletter unless they have specfically opted in.

Anyone have a similar experience or opinion?  Please feel free to share.
